How to prepare your car for the MOT in Torre-Pacheco (and pass it first time)
The Spanish MOT — locally called the ITV — isn't an impossible exam. It's designed to make sure the car meets basic safety and emissions standards. Most cars in good order pass without any drama. But one in five vehicles booked in comes out with at least one serious defect and has to go back.
What's striking is that many of those failures would have shown up in a 10-minute pre-check. Ten minutes that save you a second visit, a second fee and weeks of paperwork delay.
The most common failure points
After years fitting brakes and tyres to cars that came back from the ITV with defects, we know by heart where people usually trip up. Almost everything falls into five buckets:
- Lights: a bulb blown, misaligned beams, or non-approved colours (typical with unapproved LED conversions).
- Tyres: tread below the legal minimum, visible cracks or two different sizes on the same axle.
- Brakes: uneven force across wheels, pads at minimum or a worn disc.
- Emissions: smoking car, exhaust leaks, blocked DPF.
- Windows: crack in the driver's wiper sweep zone, misplaced stickers reducing visibility.
10-minute pre-check list
Before you drive to the test centre, spend some time going over these points calmly:
- Turn on every light with someone standing behind: dipped, main beam, fog, indicators, brake, reverse, number plate. If one is out, replace it.
- Check all four tyres: tread depth, pressure, sidewall condition.
- Test the wipers and screen wash. Yes, the ITV checks it.
- Confirm the horn works and the number plate is fully visible.
- Look under the car for large oil or fluid patches.
- If there's a warning light on the dashboard (engine, ABS, airbag), the ITV will definitely spot it. Don't go without clearing it first.
The nearest ITV centre to Torre-Pacheco
Torre-Pacheco doesn't have its own ITV centre. The ones our customers use most are San Javier, Los Alcázares and Cartagena. All of them require booking online in advance — don't just turn up, you'll waste your morning.
Practical tip: book the earliest slot in the morning. If you fail on something small, you've got the rest of the day to sort it and go back for the partial re-test before they close.
Specific note for drivers with UK plates
If your car is UK-plated and you've been living here for more than 6 months, Spanish law requires you to re-register it in Spain. Until that process is done, you can't take the Spanish ITV (registration comes first), and your UK MOT is only valid here for the tourist period allowed.
At Salpe we look after UK vehicles every week and we know the specifics well: rear fog lamps, continental-pattern headlights, rear seat belts. If you need to prep your car for the re-registration process, we can help with the mechanical pre-check. Just ask us.
Pre-MOT at Salpe
We offer a pre-MOT service: in about an hour we check every point the test centre will check. If something fails, we tell you and quote you to fix it in advance. If everything is fine, you head off to the centre knowing your car is ready.
The cost of a pre-MOT is a fraction of paying for the inspection twice. You can book online or give us a ring to reserve a slot.
