Summer tyres for the Mar Menor: what changes when it gets hot
Around the Mar Menor, from late June to September, it's normal to see the thermometer nudge 38 or 40°C. When the air is that hot, the tarmac happily gets to 60°C. And that's the temperature your tyres are working at while you drive.
The heat isn't a minor detail: it changes how the rubber behaves, how the pressure evolves and how long the tyre lasts. If you understand what happens inside a tyre when summer bites, you'll know what to check before setting off with the family towards Los Alcázares or San Javier.
How heat affects the rubber compound
A modern tyre is designed with a rubber compound that becomes more flexible as it warms up. That improves grip, especially in corners. But when the heat is extreme and sustained, the rubber degrades faster. It dries out, loses elasticity and the classic sidewall cracks start to appear.
A tyre that was fine through winter can start playing up in the middle of August. So if your tyres are already 5 or 6 years old, summer is a good time for a proper look. At Salpe we do it free in 10 minutes.
Pressure: why you should check it more often in summer
For every 10°C rise in temperature, tyre pressure goes up by around 0.1 bar. It sounds like nothing, but on a hot day a tyre that starts a trip at 2.3 bar can easily end it at 2.7 bar without you touching a thing.
The classic mistake is bleeding air out when the tyre is hot to "compensate". Don't. Pressure is always measured with a cold tyre, before driving. If you do it hot, once it cools down you'll be below the minimum — and that's where the real grip and fuel problems start.
Long trips to the beach: specific preparation
Before a holiday trip or a weekend with the car packed to the roof, spend five minutes on four things:
- Pressure on all four wheels (and the spare if you have one).
- Adjust the pressure for extra load: check the label on the driver's door, most cars list a higher pressure for a fully loaded car.
- Visual check of the sidewall: no cracks, no bulges, no cuts.
- Tread depth: if you're close to the minimum, don't leave.
If you're unsure about any of these points, pop into Salpe before you leave. Ten minutes of checking is worth a lot more than a breakdown on the hard shoulder of the A-30 at 45°C with the kids in the back.
Tips for foreign drivers spending the summer here
Every summer we look after a lot of British, French, German and Dutch residents who spend part of the year in the Mar Menor resorts. A few practical things if that's you:
- Heat here is much more aggressive than in northern Europe. A tyre that lasts 5 years in Manchester can age faster around here.
- If your car has been sat for months, check the pressures before moving it: it's normal for them to have dropped.
- Our equipment is fully compatible with vehicles registered in the UK, France and other European countries. We work with all brands and sizes.
- We speak English. No language barrier, no rush.
In short
Summer asks more of a tyre than most people realise. It's not just a grip question: it's temperature, pressure and rubber age. With a simple check before the season kicks in you avoid a lot of grief and get more life out of a whole set. You can book online or drop by the workshop.
